Our emotions are not just thoughts. They are experiences that often show up in our bodies. Paying attention to physical sensations can help us better understand our emotional responses. You might notice:
Feeling hot or cold
Pressure in your chest, back, head, or shoulders
Butterflies in your stomach
Tingling in your arms, hands, or fingers
Changes in your face, lips, or eyes
A sense of relaxation or looseness
Feeling energized
These sensations are not problems to solve. They are clues that can help you understand what you are feeling beneath the surface.
When you notice these sensations, try getting curious instead of pushing them away. Ask yourself: Where do I feel this in my body? Has it changed? Is it moving or staying still? You do not have to judge the sensation or make it disappear. Observing it with kindness can help you connect with your emotional experience in a way that feels more manageable. Often, our bodies begin to settle when we allow ourselves to notice what is there rather than fighting against it.
Many of us have learned to ignore, suppress, or distract ourselves from uncomfortable emotions. While that may bring temporary relief, emotions that are repeatedly shoved down often return with greater intensity. Giving yourself permission to notice what your body is communicating can help you respond with curiosity instead of fear. Over time, this practice can build greater emotional awareness, making it easier to understand your needs, care for yourself, and move through emotions rather than feeling stuck in them.
